Magazine Choices

One of the good things about having a blog is the near-instantaneous advice I can get from the world.  If you have no idea what I'm talking about, just ignore this post.

So I was about to renew my CMJ subscription, but I thought maybe I would check out Uncut first.  Thing is, I can't find it anywhere.  For those of you who are aficionados of music magazines, is Uncut worth it?  It's over double the subscription price of CMJ.  And Uncut did call the White Stripes' "Get Behind Me Satan" brilliant.  Brilliant?  I called it repetitive and annoying.  Opinions appreciated.

I tend to find the Brit mags like Uncut and Mojo give you much more in depth coverage on a subject.

The Wire is still the gold standard, but it is expensive and after awhile you wonder whether maybe you're not smart enough to read it. The comment above about level of detail is very accurate. The Brits bring a level of seriousness to music criticism that we Yanks for some reason don't. For my money, the one domestic music mag I keep coming back to is Magnet. It's not great, but it's better than the alternatives.

I rally behind Mojo, although I've just started getting Paste, which is pretty nifty, too.

If you're a fan of CMJ, there's a chance you'll be disappointed by Uncut. It is a good magazine and most of the time I enjoy the CD samplers that are included, but I think its musical tastes tend to be fairly cookie-cutter simple. While CMJ is more diverse in its musical subject matter, Uncut is more focused on British and European artists and tends to be more mainstream. At least in my opinion.
