It Ain't Over Until The Gov't Fatcat Sings

The council's smoking ban legislation is now off to Congress for approval.  I believe it goes to the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Government Affairs (all you gov't types can correct me if I'm wrong).  For all of us ban opponents, this is the last chance we have to stop the ban in its entirety.  I urge you to write to the Senators on the committee and ask that they block the DC council legislation.  And yes, I think it's wrong that Congress even has this power, but they do.  When a law so blatantly tramples civil liberty on grounds that are so obviously spurious, I'll use any means necessary to stop it.

Here's who you should contact.  I was going to prepare a group "mailto" link, but apparently you have to use their web forms to send them email.  At least contact Voinovich, who I believe is the subcommittee chairman.

Some senators don't read/respond to e-mails from non-constituents, so good luck there. Your best bet might be to hit up the Hardest Workin' Woman in Washington, Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton.

Well, I presume that she would always be against usurping Council legislation, so I doubt she would help.

I hope they don't toss out letters from non-constituents out of hand :-(

The only way they'll know is if you tell them. I think I live in Ohio today.

That's true, the other option is to falsify a local address. Just make sure you do it through their e-mail system if you're going to go that route.
