If You're Going To San Francisco

In a few hours I'll be on a five and half hour flight to San Francisco.  Fun.  Honestly, I not very happy about this trip.  Living out of a hotel and working 12 days isn't my idea of a good time.  I'm a bit of a homebody.  But whatevs.  I'll finally get to try this Rice-A-Roni I've been hearing about.   So in the hopes of making the best of it, I'm officially soliciting recommendations for food, bars, sites, etc (in addition to those of you who already left comments in the previous post).  I won't have a whole lot of free time, but I'll make some time for small diversions.

Anyway, I'm sure my next post will be up much later tonight, entitled "Why I'm Never Flying Again."

1. Anywhere in North Beach
2. I hear Ghiardelli Square has gotten super commercial since the last time I was there (early-mid nineties) but I loved it, and it's one of the few places you can get Ghiardelli ice cream. Mmmm.

RCR, San Francisco is the best. You can get GREAT mexican food there. The best place to head for in town for Mexican food is an area called The Mission.

The Embarcardero, while a bit touristy is the main shopping area of town if you want to do some shopping while you are there. There are also some fun bars around there.

You should also check out Golden Gate Park. It is enormous and beautiful. If you like to run it is a great spot. The neighborhood around there, Cole Valley, also has some good restaurants and a few neighborhood bars and cafes.

I don't have any restaurant suggestions, but I want you to take a nice walk around and look at the architecture and enjoy being in a beautiful place. Have a good time, RCR--even if you do have to work.

Have fun in San Fran! I hope you see one of those red trolleys going down a street, just like in the Rice-a-Roni commercial-- that's been a dream of mine since, well, just now.

I have several friends in San Francisco. I'll ask them to pop by and leave some suggestions, if they can.

Taqueria Cancun in the Mission makes veggie burritos that will blow your mind. Crepes on Cole (Cole Valley) is fricking awesome, as well, despite having served as a location for FORTY DAYS AND FORTY NIGHTS--and by the way, we're not talking about pussy little dessert crepes...think more like: different twist on the sandwich. I liked Park Chow (on Park Street), and the sushi is good everywhere--Sushi No Name in the Castro is sushi as good as you typically find in DC only at happy meal prices...or go upscale and bliss out.

When we went out, we hit up The Latin American Club in the Mission and had a nice time. It's the sister club the the famed Make-Out Room, but it wasn't as crowded or laden with trendoids. I hear sports fans love Kezar Pub...I think that's in the Haight. And everyone waiting for their tables at restaurants on Haight-Ashbury heads to Cha Cha Cha to pile against one another and down gallons of the best sangria on earth, which is quite literally crowd-surfed to your waiting arms by the drunk, happy crowd.

If you have a lot of free time on your hands, I'd definitely recommend a trip to Amoeba Music as well, but it's not a place you want to go an hour before you're due to check in at the airport.

Oh, and if you want to experience the cheesiest thing San Francisco has to offer, go up to the Nob Hill neighborhood, seek out the Fairmont Hotel, and take in the simulated indoor hurricane in the Tonga Room. Goofy as hell, but it's just one of those quintessential San Francisco things you have to do before you die.

Thanks all. Already busy as hell, but I'll be blogging as soon as I get the wireless connection in my hotel to work.

CHA CHA CHA, out of all the restaurants in all the cities I've ever visited/lived this one is the best. One in the Mission and also one in the Haight (as DCeiver mentioned).

North Beach & the Marina are great for walking around/bar hopping COIT Tower (curses to you O'Reilly) is a must, the Exploratorium (not just for the kiddies), Museum of Fine Arts is awesome to just go look at if you don't have time. Enjoy the city by the bay...

I know it's a touristy place, but Fisherman's Wharf has some of THE BEST people-watching ever. My dad and I went to San Fran together and wandered around the Wharf eating junkey vendor food and watching people from benches. Then we rode the cable cars back up our hotel. But I'm a people-watcher... if you're not into that, avoid the Wharf. It's otherwise a tourist trap.

If you have any time off, drive through the Presdio, across the GG Bridge, and up to Muir Woods where you can walk amongst the giant Redwoods and get your hippie groove on.
