Most Valuable Possession

A great thing about blogging is the synergy.  I get a lot of ideas from reading other people's blogs.  Anyway, today I was thinking a lot about the concept of a most valuable possession.  There are a lot of ways to think about it I guess - if you could only save one thing from your burning house, what would it be?  Or if you could only take one thing to a deserted island, what would it be?  I'm not talking about living things or abstractions - not your pet or your mother or your health.  Those aren't possessions for the sake of this question.  It's indeed hard to narrow it down to one item, or even one class of items.  Your most valuable possession could be of great sentimental value, of great monetary value, of great utilitarian value - I need not venture into the philosophy of how we ascertain value.

For me, I guess it would be the acoustic guitar my mom gave for the first Christmas after my dad died.  In addition to being my first acoustic guitar, it was a tacit acknowledgement that my mom was both desperate and helpless to alleviate the sadness of the holiday.  It was no replacement, to be sure, but given the circumstances no other possession has done as much to help me.  So in that sense, it is both sentimental and utilitarian, in that I derive enjoyment from playing it.  What is your most valuable possession?

Bonus points if you know your most valuable possession according to Ben Folds's dad.

It's probably breaking the rules, but I say the internet.

Yes, that's breaking the rules. Come on, there must be something - your favorite jerk off sock, your favorite pair of panties that you put on while dancing to madonna.

The lock of my mother's hair that I cut from her head the day before she died. How cheery is that, for you. As for Ben Fold....your mind???

I have a gray stuffed kitty. (Her name is gray kitty... original, right?) She was given to me on the day I was born, so I've always had her in lieu of a 'blankie'. Although she no longer looks like a cat, as I chewed her ears off when I was little; she looks more like a gray seal or something like that... But I'd be DEVASTATED if I lost her.

Of course, more importantly, is my real pet cat, Twink...

I'd bring my boat, full of gas. That way I could ride around the island all day when I got bored.

Every time I hear a story like Sara's I feel a little better about my own situation of still sleeping with Bunny (also originally named) a stuffed rabbit my grandma gave me when I was one. Yes, I'm in my mid-20s. Yes, I still sleep with Bunny (and taken him all over the world with me as I've traveled). That only makes me slightly freakish. Deal with it.

So I'd take him. Or maybe my photo albums.

Good morning, Mr. Rmbler. It's about 6:30, Washington, DC. Just laying here in the bed, half awake, half asleep, thinking about you. I was, uh, wondering if you were looking after your most valuable possession--your mind. I was thinking about John Glenn, his space journey and all. They said that when you're in space you lose muscle mass...and the body mass...and I wondered if there was any...end to it. Or whether if you didn't exercise in space, how long it would be for you were just...a head, or a mind, and have no body or arms--you would have them but you couldn't use them. I was wondering if, uh, if your body mass would drop to a certain level, and then it would stop right there and keep whatever you needed to use your mind, because it would still be working. 30 seconds remaining...anyway, I was just pondering that. What do you think about that? I hope everything is going all right, I'm going to wake up here in a little while and forget what I was thinking about.

Bonus points to Cubie, but extra super bonus points to The Dounce for the complete recitation of "Your Most Valuable Possession" from the Ben Folds Five's "Unauthorized Biography of Reinhold Messner."

Like Genevieve and Sara it would be my bear, Ted Edward Bear (Ted E. Bear for short cute huh) and my "blankie". Yes I'm in my twenties and they're still with me. Blankie I've had since I was born and Ted Edward I got for Christmas not long after my father past away. When I'm down they're the most comforting things to have around. They've gone with me just about everywhere. I view them as an inseparable pair so they are my mvp.

My Freaks and Geeks fan edition box set. I don't even watch it very often, but just knowing I can is a comfort.

Of course you run into the logistical problems re: hardware, but I'm going to ignore those for this exercise.

My wife still has a teddy bear that I absolutely can't stand. It's fur is disgusting and it's neck has a hole in it, making it resemble a used brillo pad with a tracheotomy.

To be honest, and being forced to pick something, I'd have to say this computer through which I do an extraordinary amount of living.

Now I'm depressed and vow to go out more.

Computer? I picked a freaking computer?
